My name is Rebecca Bolan '16. I am just finishing up my last few weeks as an Elmira College Freshman and thought that I would share a few helpful tips to the incoming freshman. College can be very intimidating, especially in the first few weeks. It is a completely different world from high school, even at a school as small as Elmira College. Future freshman should look at this page for how to act/survive in their freshman year. I will try to post new tips every few days! I hope you guys enjoy! :)
Tip 1: Never take a tray in the dining hall!
-Upperclassmen automatically know who the incoming freshman are by the students who use trays the first few days of school. If you do take a tray, you will probably be laughed at by some other students so to protect yourself from embarrassment, just take the sandwich and a drink or a plate of food.
Tip 2: Meet as many people as possible your first few weeks at school!
-College is all about meeting new people and making connections with them. Try to be outgoing and introduce yourself to people. Every other freshman is in the same boat as you and are just waiting for people to come up and talk to them! Having a lot of friends and acquaintances will make college much more enjoyable.
Tip 3: Be completely honest with your roommate about what you are like!
-In the first few days of school talk to your roommate about when you usually go to sleep and when you would like to wake up. You should talk to each other about how you expect to live together and set ground rules other than your roommate contract. This sounds stupid but believe me it will be very beneficial in the months to come. Living with someone can be very difficult at times but you have to learn to let things go and be easy going especially with your roommate.
I hope that these tips will be helpful! Look for new tips in the next few days! :)
